About

The Island of Dr. Moreau was written by H.G. Wells and follows the story of one man: Edward Prendick. After being shipwrecked, rescued, and cast overboard, he finds himself on an island with inhabitants ranging from a disgraced scientist to creatures the likes of which Prendick had never before encountered.
This novel has strong themes of isolation and morality alongside an unnerving tone that was captured in both the illustration of the dust jacket and the text of the book. Unsettling. Isolated. Sinister. These words drove the creative vision for these designs. The panoramic dust jacket depicts Prendick's dinghy on an empty sand bar and a low horizon line, showing how alone Prendick was in the novel, and the setting sun brings along the darkness of the secrets he will discover. Isolation was further emphasized through the illustration's limited color palette. Vendetta was the chosen typeface for the content of the book due to its sharp terminals and sinister-looking italics. Proportions for the page margins were unconventional; the fore-edge margin and the foot margin are slightly larger than expected, subtly unsettling the reader without being distracting.
